headgasket update

after about a week of running the 1layer headgasket i tried to do a compression test
cylinder 1 225psi
cylinder 2 225psi
cylinder 3 225psi
cylinder 4 230psi

not bad, i’m not sure if it’s me or not but throttle response does feel to be better 🙂

DIY thin headgasket 2ply, maybe 1ply?

Okay, so the oem honda headgasket is a 3ply metal headgasket.

Here is the compression i can get with this setup
b18c block(87.20mm stroke, 81.25mm bore with p73-A0 pistons), pr3 head
using the http://www.c-speedracing.com compression calculator
http://www.c-speedracing.com/howto/compcalc/compcalc.php

3ply (oem) headgasket = 10.65:1cr
2ply = 10.92:1cr
1ply = 11.2:1cr

Using the 1layer headgasket will bring me just over the jdm typeR stock compression ratio, which is 11.1:1cr.

Start off by removing the rivets that bind the 3 metal layers together.
removing rivets from the headgasket
Once all the rivets have been removed the headgasket will seperate into it’s 3 seperate layers.

Once seperated i used a copper sealant to facilitate sealing.
The brand i used was called Permatex, same brand that makes the ultra grey for valve cover gaskets 🙂

left to dry

Well, originally i was going to do a 2ply gasket since i was a bit paranoid. After talking with Gil Salazar from Circuit hero, he gave me the confidence to try a 1ply headgasket. I suppose this is where you gain experience 🙂 No guts no glory as they say, and learn from experience.
ready to go :)

Put the head back on, torque the ARP headstuds to 80ft/lbs and i’ll be testing this setup.
Thanks everyone help and support.
I’ll keep you guys updated 🙂

After 5000km followup

So the new engine has been running for 5000km’s now. Break-in is definitly done, with some light streeting tuning for full throttle and partical. Engine seems to be running fairly nice.
I opened up the head to look at how the combustion chamber and piston tops look. The burn looks decent, not too rich not too lean, just a nice tan burn 🙂

But wait….looks like this is not the final journey of engine2. I decided to try a 1ply headgasket see how that works out to give some more added compression.

nice burn :)

it’s Christmas time :)

Oh today i got my Christmas present early 🙂
Thanks to Ben at AJRacing who helped me attain the very last new Spoon Street ek/eg hatch muffler available 🙂 Once this was ordered Spoon said the ek/eg street muffler was discontinued.
I wanted this for a long time since is high flowing, quiet and has a relatively small tip, all good for not attracting police attention.

My wife knew i wanted this for a long time and she purchased it for me. I’m so happy today i can’t stop the smiles 🙂
Thank you Winny and thank you Ben, you guys are AWESOME!!!
i love you both 🙂 but i love my wife more of course 🙂
post some pic’s soon
here’s what was waiting at home 🙂
